Support Bill C-484

Private member’s Bill C-484, put forward by MP Ken Epp, is garnering a varied response across Canada. The bill is designed to protect the rights of those pregnant mothers who have chosen to carry their child to term, thereby making it legal for someone who injures/kills a pregnant women to be charged with two crimes.  

Pro-’choice’ activists are opposing this bill because, as Mr. Epp said in article published May 15, 2008 in the Ottawa Citizen, “it recognizes some value in the unborn child (in that it can be the victim of a crime) which might lead to some Canadians changing their minds about abortion (which also deals with the unborn child). But how is that a justifiable reason to oppose this bill? Is it right in a free and democratic society to try to control how and what people think? If people of their own free will decide to rethink their position on an important issue, why should we try to suppress that, especially if it means sacrificing in the process something which in and of itself is just and good and supported by a vast majority of Canadians?”  

As Mr. Epp said (OTTAWA, November 21, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) ): ”This is all about protecting the choice of a woman to give birth to her child.  It is about condemning the actions of those who would take it upon themselves to criminally assault a pregnant woman and the child she wants and loves, destroying that child against her will….Having heard the heart-rending stories of the families of the victims, I am absolutely convinced that this is an issue which cannot be swept aside.  How do you tell these grieving families that the child they loved and lost never even existed in the eyes of the law? My Unborn Victims of Crime bill addresses this grave injustice, and I encourage all my Colleagues from all parties to support this bill when it comes up for a vote in the House.”
